On September 19, 2023, Minor League Baseball announced the 2023 Carolina League All Stars and Postseason Awards. Featured as the Carolina League All Star Catcher and Most Valuable Player was former Shorebirds Catcher Samuel Basallo!

Basallo burst onto the scene with Delmarva entering his first professional season putting everyone on notice of the raw talent that he possesses. In Basallo’s Single-A debut against the Salem Red Sox he quickly showed those strong attributes with a three-hit and two RBI performance.

That would be just the start of a special season for Basallo as he took off quickly climbing the Orioles stellar prospect rankings and establishing himself as another superstar in the Orioles system. Basallo would end his time with Delmarva ranked second on the team in home runs with his first ever grand slam coming on July 2, 2023, showcasing an impressive display of power.

When it was all said and done for Basallo’s time in Delmarva, the 19-year-old would put himself on high notice with a stellar first season of affiliated baseball. In 83 games with Delmarva, Basallo slugged 12 home runs with 60 RBI while generating an OPS of .887. The young backstop also showcased tremendous defensive ability as he threw out 36 base stealers, gunning down nearly 50% of attempts against him. Right before his 19th birthday in early August, he was promoted to Aberdeen where he hit 8 more home runs in 27 High-A games.

His season would continue to Double-A Bowie where he played out the final week of the regular season with the Baysox. He began the season as the No. 12 prospect for the Orioles, but by season’s end, he was ranked No. 5 in Baltimore’s system by MLB Pipeline while also jumping to No. 46 in the overall Top-100 prospect after not being ranked to start the season.

Basallo is another future star in the Orioles rich farm system that Shorebirds fans got to witness first right here on Delmarva as he continues his journey to Camden Yards!
